About this course

Our General English courses combine language input with skills practice to improve your ability to use English confidently and accurately in different real-life situations. Each lesson has clear objectives to support your overall progress and to develop your fluency and accuracy.

Using a coursebook and workbook, you will study and practise using new language and your teacher will give you advice about how you can improve your English inside and outside the classroom.

Why should I choose this British Council course?

Take a General English course and you will:

  • get a qualified and experienced teacher
  • work in pairs and groups to develop real-life communication skills
  • practise your listening, speaking, reading and writing using a range of stimulating materials and classroom activities
  • become a more independent language learner
  • enjoy learning English.

The right level for you

We offer General English at a range of levels. Whether you are a Starter who can communicate only very basic information or an Upper-Intermediate student who can understand and use more complex language, we have a course for you.

If you are new to the British Council, you will need to take a placement test to find out which level is right for you. Book a test by calling or by visiting the Tripoli Teaching Centre.

How will I be assessed?

We measure your progress using continuous assessment and a formal end-of-course test.

We do this to help you understand what your strengths are and where there is room for improvement. We also measure your progress to see if you are ready to move up to the next General English level.
